What Is a Dental Emergency?
A dental emergency is any situation that requires immediate care to stop pain, bleeding, or prevent further damage.
- Severe or persistent toothache
- Knocked-out or broken tooth
- Swollen face or gums due to infection
- Lost dental crown or filling
- Bleeding gums that won’t stop
- Abscessed tooth or oral infection
- Injuries from sports or accidents
If you’re unsure whether your situation is an emergency, call our office — our team can assess your symptoms and guide you on what to do next.
What to Do in a Dental Emergency
Until you can reach our office, here are some quick tips to manage the situation:
- Toothache: Rinse your mouth with warm water and take over-the-counter pain relief. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gums.
- Knocked-out tooth: Hold the tooth by the crown (not the root), rinse gently, and place it back in the socket if possible. If not, keep it in milk or a tooth preservation kit and get to us immediately.
- Broken tooth: Rinse with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling.
- Lost filling or crown: Use dental cement (available at pharmacies) to protect the tooth until you can see us.
- Bleeding: Apply gentle pressure with a clean gauze pad. If bleeding persists, go to the nearest emergency room.
